Mother cleared of killing baby son
A mother who was accused of killing her 15-month son by poisoning him with salt has been cleared of both murder and manslaughter charges at Winchester Crown Court.
Marianne Williams, 24, from Wiltshire, had denied killing Joshua, who had been born prematurely and suffered from kidney problems.
Joshua died after being taken to Southampton General Hospital on February 24, 2004 in a serious condition. Tests showed that he had high levels of sodium in his body before he died.
During the trial it was alleged that Ms Williams, who was on anti-depressants, had killed Joshua because she could not cope with caring for him.
However, the defence argued that Joshua had died as a result of a combination of his medical condition and the drugs he was taking for his care.
The court heard how Joshua needed to receive daily doses of sodium chloride in order to replenish salt levels in his body, because his kidneys expelled too much sodium.
The child was had been born 12 weeks prematurely in November 2002, weighing just 2lbs 10oz. His twin had died in the womb.
