Pregnant women to get flu jab
Pregnant women are to be given free flu jabs from next year that could protect their unborn child from leukaemia.
More than 200,000 women due to give birth next winter will receive the flu jab if it is approved by the Department of Health.
Britain's leading flu expert, Professor John Oxford told the Daily Mail: "This is a huge initiative. Pregnant women are one of the most important sectors of society. They are carrying the youngsters of the future."
According to scientists if the mother is exposed to flu when pregnant the risk of leukaemia is more than doubled to the unborn baby.
The Government has the final say on whether the programme is approved.

The Department of Health has said on Thursday that it needs further advice from the committee looking into the flu vaccine before it can roll out a larger programme. The announcement follows a request from Health Secretary Andrew Lansley to look at whether the flu vaccination programme should be extended to healthy children.

Mums-In-Wating Get Unproved Flu Jab
It has emerged that pregnant women are to get a form of swine flu vaccine that is not recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The vaccine Pandemrix, which makes up the bulk of NHS supply, contains a chemical called an adjuvant that has never been tested on mums-to-be.

Overweight and obese mums-to-be are risking the health of themselves and their unborn children, as well as putting additional strain on the health service, research has suggested. Researchers at Teesside University carried out a study into maternal obesity and pregnancy outcome.

Flu jabs planned for all Britons
The government has announced plans to vaccinate everyone in the UK in the event of a flu pandemic. Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson announced that the Department of Health is inviting manufacturers to tender for a contract to supply pandemic flu vaccine.
