Police question Howard in honours investigation

Former Conservative leader Michael Howard has been questioned by Scotland Yard investigating a "cash-for-honours" scandal.

Mr Howard was interviewed on Monday at his home in London.

In a statement released on Monday Mr Howard said: "In response to a request from the police, I agreed to be interviewed by them in connection with their inquiries into nominations for peerages.

"The police emphasised that they wanted to interview me as a witness and that I was not under suspicion of having committed any criminal offence."

Police are investigating allegations that political honours - including seats in the House of Lords - were traded for cash.

Two government ministers and Labour's chief fundraiser Lord Levy are among around 50 people who have been questioned in the inquiry.

Several Conservative donors have also been interviewed.
