'Card fraud risk' at Tesco self-scan tills

A security loophole on Tesco self-service tills is making it easy for thieves to use stolen cards to buy cards, consumer group Which? has warned.

Shoppers can now scan their shopping themselves at around 200 of the supermarket chain's stores, and then pay for their groceries with a debit or credit card.

However, Which? said that the system was flawed because Tesco did not require people to sign or enter a pin number.

The consumer group said that it had been contacted by customers who lost hundreds of pounds after their card details had been stolen and used at the tills. They had since been refunded by their banks.

Which? editor Neil Fowler said: "It's hard to believe that the UK's biggest supermarket is making it so easy for criminals to use stolen credit cards in their stores. We think it's highly irresponsible. As a shop that prides itself on caring about its customers, we can only hope they close this obvious loophole and introduce standard security procedures in the very near future."

Tesco has denied that there is higher risk of fraud at the self-scan tills.

The supermarket confirmed that chip and pin would be introduced at the tills by the end of the year.
