Police arrest Number 10 intruder

Police have arrested an armed intruder close to Number 10 Downing Street, it has been revealed.

The intruder, who was armed with a knife, was arrested at the back of Number 10 on Sunday night.

It is understood that the man was challenged by a police officer as soon as he climbed over a fence into a secure area at the back of the Prime Minister's residence.

Scotland Yard said that there had been a "scuffle" and confirmed that the man was arrested on suspicion of affray and assaulting a police officer.

The man is now in police custody and is being examined by a doctor to see if he is fit to be interviewed.

Tony Blair is understood to have been at Number 10 at the time of the incident. However, Scotland Yard said: "We are satisfied that at no time was the Prime Minister at risk."
