Restrictions likely on EU migrants
Romanian and Bulgarian workers coming to the UK if both countries join the EU next year, could face restrictions Home Secretary John Reid has indicated.
Speaking to senior police officers, Mr Reid said: "We need to be ready for fresh challenges. I know that law enforcement agencies have already been working closely with the Romanian and Bulgarian governments to identify the new challenges.
"We need to consider very carefully all the implications of accession of new states and ensure that we have all the necessary safeguards in place, right down to local borough level to reassure the public that this movement will be managed fairly and competently."
Both Romania and Bulgaria could join the European Union in January 2007, although a final decision has not yet been made.
It is estimated that around 600,000 Eastern Europeans have moved to the UK since 2004.
According to reports at the end of last month, there are plans to introduce a work permit system, similar to the points-based system used outside the UK.
