Life sentence for car thief killer

A man has been jailed for life for causing death by dangerous driving when he knocked down and killed a 48-year-old grandmother.

Paul Wales, 47, of Gorst Street in Walton, Liverpool, was also convicted of aggravated vehicle taking. He will serve a minimum term of four years and four months.

Grandmother Pamela Phinn, 48, was knocked down when she attempted to push her two grandchildren out of the way of a speeding vehicle. The family party which included Mr Phinn, her 28-year-old daughter-in-law, and two small childen, were struck by the car which had been stolen from her sister.

Wales had threatened Mrs Phinn's sister with a screwdriver before making off with the vehicle. He had travelled a mile before the vehicle mounted the pavement and knocked Mrs Phinn in the air.

Wales also admitted driving without insurance.

At sentencing, the judge said that Wales would be "imprisoned indefinitely," and only be eligible for parole when he had served the minimum term.

Woman Arrested Following House Fire
A woman aged in her 30s has been arrested following a house fire in Ruabon, Wales. At around 5.08am this morning (27 August), emergency services responded to reports of a house fire in Wynn Avenue, Ruabon. Neighbours were able to help a girl, 10, and a seven-year-old boy from the fire.

Boy Injured In Taxi Collison
A 10-year-old is being treated in hospital for serious head injuries after he was in collision with a taxi in Swansea. South Wales Police are appealing for witnesses following the incident at 8.45pm last night immediately outside the Mosque in St Helen's Road, Swansea. A white Vauxhall Vectra taxi was involved.

Four Die In Refinery Blast
A police investigation has been launched following an explosion at a Pembrokeshire oil refinery. It has been confirmed that four people died as a result of the incident and one worker remains critically ill. The blast occured around 6.

Man Killed In Major Collision In North Wales
A man has died in a four vehicle collision on the main A55 expressway in north Wales. It is understood that two lorries, a van and another vehicle were involved in a collision between St Asaph and Abergele at St George, Conwy county at about 08:30 on Tuesday morning.

Student Killed On Way To Collect GCSE Results
A teenage girl has died after being knocked down while on her way to collect her GCSE results. The 16-year-old girl, who has not been named, was hit by a refuse lorry at 9am near to her school Ysgol Gyfun Treorci in the Rhondda, south Wales. Paramedics treated the student as she lay trapped under the vehicle on Conway Street.
