Suspected Mafia boss arrested in London

A man suspected of being a 'Mafia Godfather' has been arrested in London.

Raffaele Caldarelli, 35, is wanted in Italy, where he was sentenced to 20 years in jail for a number of offences including extortion, drug-running and arms smuggling in 1995.

It is understood that Mr Caldarelli was arrested by armed officers in Hackney, east London, close to a shoe shop that he ran.

Italian police had requested assistance from the Metropolitan Police to capture Mr Caldarelli who is described as very dangerous.

Mr Caldarelli is suspected of being the boss of the Caldarelli clan in his home-town of Naples. The gang, which is reported to have around 6,000 members, is believed to operate extortion and protection rackets.

Mr Caldarelli is the second suspected mobster to be arrested in London in the past 18 months.

Francesco Tonicello, one of the most wanted men in Italy, was arrested at Vauxhall Tube station in south London, where he was working as a newspaper seller.

Mr Caldarelli appeared at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, where he was remanded in custody to reappear on September 13, via video link from Wandsworth Prison.

It is understood that extradition proceedings were instigated at Wednesday's hearing.

Handicapped Girl's Rapist Jailed
A rapist has been sentenced at Inner London Crown Court following his earlier conviction. Rafal Piotr Smucz, 29, of no fixed address was jailed indefinitely and ordered to serve a minimum of six years.

Man Jailed For Attempted Murder Of Pc
A south London man has been jailed for 25 years for tying to shoot a policeman. Michael Mitchell, 32, of Babington Road, Streatham, was convicted of attempting to murder Pc Shaun Callow, possession of a firearm and possession of drugs with intent to supply.

Wanted Man Arrested In London
The man wanted in connection with the murder of a 66-year-old man who intervened during a robbery, has been arrested. Ian John McLoughlin, 55, was arrested in London at around 01:00. He was wanted on suspicion of murder and robbery. Airports and ports had been put on alert as police hinted for McLoughlin.
