UK requests extradition of suspect from Pakistan

Britain has requested the extradition of a terrorist suspect being held in Pakistan, in connection with a murder committed in 2002.

Rashid Rauf was arrested in Pakistan on August 9 in connection with an alleged plot to blow up transatlantic flights.

The Metropolitan Police have not confirmed which murder case the extradition request related to.

However, a spokesperson for the British High Commission in Islamabad would not confirm or deny that the request had been made.

Pakistan has no extradition treaty with the UK, although it was reported that the country's Interior Minister Aftab Khan Sherpao said that a request to deport Mr Rauf to London would be considered, if it was made.

Meanwhile, it was reported that Mr Rauf's brother Tayib Rauf, 22, had been released without charge in relation to the alleged plot.

Eight people are still being held in custody.
