Government appoints 'minister for fitness'

A minister for fitness has been appointed by the government in order to tackle the increasing obesity problem in England.

Public Health Minister Caroline Flint will be in charge getting people to increase their levels of physical activity.

The announcement comes ahead of the publication of Department of Health figures, which are expected to show a significant increase in adult obesity within four years.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health said that figures showed that a third of men will be obese by 2010 if nothing is done to tackle the problem.

Ms Flint said that she had been given the job in order to help transform the public into a "fitter and more active nation in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games".

Ms Flint will be working with a number of government departments in order to develop a fitness strategy.
