Royal editor in court on phone hacking charges

The 'News of the World's' royal editor has appeared in court charged in connection with allegations of hacking into mobile phones belonging to the Royal Family.

Clive Goodman, 48, from Putney, London, appeared at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, charged with conspiring to intercept voicemail messages and intercepting voicemail messages.

Another man, Glenn Mulcaire, 35, from Sutton, Surrey, also appeared in court charged with the same offences.

The charges relate to the alleged interception of messages for members of the Royal Family between January and May this year.

The arrests came after an investigation by Scotland Yard, launched more than seven months ago following complaints from staff at Clarence House - Prince Charles' official residence - regarding alleged repeated breaches within the telephone network.

Both men were released on unconditional bail until a hearing on November 29.
