Pigeon row man jailed for killing neighbour

A pigeon-fancier has been jailed for eight years for killing his neighbour after blaming her for a fire which killed 50 of his birds.

Michael Stockton, 44, from Audley, Staffordshire claimed that he had no recollection of shooting dead Susan Rondel on Boxing Day last year.

Stockton was acquitted of murder, but was found guilty of manslaughter by reason of provocation.

The court heard that Stockton and Mrs Rondel, 48, had a history of friction between them. Prior to her death, Mrs Rondel, who was originally from Wales, had accused Stockton of poisoning her cat.

At sentencing, Judge John Saunders, said that Stockton had taken Mrs Rondel's life in the most violent way possible. He said: "Whatever may or may not have happened between the two of you in the past, nothing that had happened in any way justifies what you did."
