Airport security relaxed following terror alert
Restrictions on hand luggage at UK airports have been relaxed, following the government's reduction in the security threat level from 'critical' to 'severe'. However airport operator BAA has warned that strict security is remaining in place at all UK airports, with passengers still facing delays at some airports.
BAA said that, although restrictions had been relaxed, there were still some restrictions on hand luggage.
Passengers are now allowed to carry one item of cabin baggage on board the plane, which should be no larger than 45cm wide x 35cm long x 16 cm deep - the equivalent of a small laptop or rucksack.
Passengers are still unable to take any cosmetics, toiletries such as toothpaste, hair gel, lotions, perfume, deodorant, shaving foam and aerosols, and any liquids, drinks or sharp objects in their hand luggage.
Transport Security Douglas Alexander said that the new restrictions incorporated the latest intelligence about terrorist capabilities and scientific and operational thinking.
British Airways, which has been forced to cancel 44 flights, including 4 long-haul, 21 short-haul and 16 domestic flights at Heathrow and 11 domestic flights at Gatwick, has indicated that it may consider suing BAA for compensation.
Further cancellations at Heathrow on Tuesday included a Jet Airways flight, while eight Ryanair flights were also cancelled at Stansted.
The restrictions came into force last Thursday, following the uncovering of an alleged plot to blow up transatlantic flights using liquid explosives.
Twenty-three people remain in police custody in connection with the alleged plot. Police have until Wednesday to continue questioning them.
Police are also continuing to search woods near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire in connection with the investigation.
