Airlines forced to cancel flights following terror alert
BAA has ordered airlines to cancel 20% of their flights from Heathrow airport on Monday, amid continuing congestion at the airport following last week's terror alert.
British Airways has cancelled 12 European return flights departing from Terminal 4 and 27 European and domestic return flights from Terminal 1. Five return longhaul flights have also been cancelled.
Virgin Atlantic has cancelled a return flight from Heathrow to New York's JFK airport.
Ryanair called on the government to revise its security measures, saying that they were "heavy-handed". In a statement released on Sunday, the airline said that the enhanced security measures were "bringing the main London airports to the point of collapse". The statement said: "If the main UK airlines are forced to continue to cancel flights because the airports cannot meet these security requirements then the extremists will have succeeded."
A third of flights due to depart from Heathrow yesterday were cancelled.
BA chief executive Willie Walsh said that Heathrow could not process all passengers' bags because of the enhanced security process.
A spokesperson for BAA said: "We appreciate this is going to involve making some difficult decisions and we ask airlines to work together to ensure the airport community operates well together."
