British solider killed in Afghanistan named
A British soldier who was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday has been named as Private Andrew Barrie Cutts.
Pte Cutts, who served with 13 Air Assault Support Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps, in Musa Qualeh in the northern Helmand province, was involved in a pre-planned action against insurgent forces - named Operation Snakebite - when he was killed on Sunday afternoon.
Pte Cutts, 19, enlisted into the army in 2003. He was deployed to Afghanistan in March as part of the regiment's Force Protection Troop, which was formed from specially selected and highly trained soldiers within the unit. They were charged with the responsibility of providing firepower and protection for logistic support convoys delivering combat supplies to British troops in Helmand Province.
His commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Neale Jouques OBE RLC, said: "He died doing what he was good at, protecting his comrades. He was a brave and exemplary soldier. It is with enormous regret that the regiment reports the loss of Private Cutts. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andrew's family and girlfriend at this sad time."
In a statement Defence Secretary Des Browne said: "I was saddened to hear of the death of a British soldier who was supporting the Nato mission in Afghanistan. This is a huge loss for his friends and family. My thoughts are with them.
"UK Forces are making a vital contribution to bringing security to the people of Afghanistan. Today's tragic incident underlines the challenges they face in carrying out this important task."
The Royal Logistics Corps, elements of which are based in Colchester, Essex, has been deployed to Afghanistan since last month.
The death of Pte Cutts brings the number of British soldiers who have been killed in Afghanistan in the past two months to 10.
