Warning issued over letter bomb

Police investigating the posting of an explosive device to the headquarters of the Cambridge Labour Party have warned businesses, householders and community organisations in the area to be alert.

The device was posted to the party's headquarters at Alex Wood Hall in Norfolk Street in Cambridge.

It was discovered in the post on Wednesday by a member of staff who alerted police.

The area was cordoned off and the device was removed by military explosive experts. There was no explosion and no-one was injured, but examination has revealed that the device could have exploded causing injury.

Chief Superintendent Rob Needles, Cambridge police divisional commander, said: "This was a small but potentially dangerous device which could have caused injury.

"I am appealing to the public to take extra care in opening their post and if they have any suspicions about any letter or package to leave it unopened and immediately call the police.

"The device delivered to Alex Wood Hall is being further examined and we are carrying out an urgent investigation into who may have sent this and why."
