'Man 'critical' after Manchester assault

Police have appealed for information following the assault of a man who confronted youths outside his home in Greater Manchester, which left him in a critical condition.

The 27-year-old was attacked outside the house in Newhay Avenue, Benchill on Saturday night around 10:30pm, when he went outside to confront two youths throwing eggs.

The two youths were armed with planks of wood and hit the man around the head.

He was taken to Hope Hospital, suffering from severe head injuries. He remains in a critical condition.

A 16-year-old boy from Benchill has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, but police said that an 18-year-old youth is also being sought in connection with the attack.

Kidnapped Briton Freed In Nigeria
A British man has been released after being held for two days by kidnappers in Nigeria. The British High Commission confirmed that the Briton was released on Sunday after being seized on Friday outside Lagos airport. He had just arrived in the country. It is not know if any ransom was paid to secure the release of the man.
