Family pays tribute to Asian stabbing victim
The family of a young Asian man stabbed to death in a suspected racially-motivated attack have paid tribute to him.
Shezan Umarji, 20, died after receiving fatal stab wounds during a fight between around 40 white and Asian youths in Preston in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police said that a "large scale disturbance" broke out between the men, some of whom were armed with bottles, knives and baseball bats. Police have said that racial abuse was heard during the fight.
Four other people were injured in the incident and received treatment in hospital before being released.
Eight people have been arrested in connection with the incident - two have been arrested on suspicion of murder, while the others have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.
A statement released by Mr Umarji's family said they had been "devastated" by his death and said that he had been taken from them "in the cruellest way possible way".
The statement said: "His death has devastated us and his brothers and sisters who all loved the brother who was always the life and soul of the party.
"We all have happy memories of him, of his kindness, his smile and his pleasing nature.
"He never caused us or, indeed, anybody else the slightest trouble. He just got on enjoying his life.
"Now all we really want is justice for Shezan and that is why we are appealing to everybody to stay calm for our sake and to help the police with their enquiries."
