Khmer Rouge 'Butcher' dies

A former Khmer Rouge leader, known as 'The Butcher', has died in a hospital in Cambodia.

Ta Mok, the one legged 82-year-old and one of communist dictator Pol Pot's henchmen, died before he could stand trial next year for allegedly overseeing the murders of almost two million Cambodians.

Ta Mok blamed the deaths on Pol Pot, the Maiost Party's Brother Number One, who he said had been a Vietnamese agent.

Around 1.7 million people are believed to have died under Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge after it seized power in 1975.

Some victims were executed for trivial offences.

Many people were starved and overworked, and historians believe Ta Mok was a key architect of the mass murder programme that wiped out about a third of the country's population in the 'killing fields'.

Ta Mok claimed he had been looking forward to his trial to clear his name, but died after he was admitted to hospital last month with breathing problems.
