Troops arrested after field excercise death

Five soldiers have now been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, following the death of a soldier at army barracks in Wiltshire.

The 22-year-old serviceman collapsed and died around noon on Monday, following exercises at Lucknow Barracks in Tidworth.

On Monday, four soldiers were held for questioning, and on Tuesday a fifth was arrested. All are being held at Salisbury police station and all serve with the 2nd Battalion of The Royal Welsh Regiment, which is based at the barracks.

Wiltshire Police are investigating the death, because it is understood that the soldier died in a civilian area, believed to be a hospital.

The Ministry of Defence said that it was taking the incident "extremely seriously" but said that it was for Wiltshire Police to comment on the investigation.

However, Wiltshire Police said that no further details were available because the inquiry was still at an early stage.

The results of a postmortem are awaited.
