Rail strike plan shelved
The RMT union has suspended a rail strike that would have hit workers trying to get home to see the England game against Sweden on Tuesday, June 20.
However, plans for a strike on June 25, which would clash with the World Cup second round game if England win through to play as winner or runner-up in Group B remain in place.
The RMT said that the strike by 5,000 Network Rail signalling and operational staff scheduled for Tuesday, June 20, and Wednesday June 21, has been suspended to allow consultation with members on an improved pay and conditions offer from the company.
However, the RMT said that industrial action due for June 25 and June 26 remains on pending the outcome of that consultation.
RMT general secretary Bob Crow, today, said: "Network Rail's new offer would mean a combined increase in basic rates totalling eleven per cent between April this year and April 2007.
"Implementation of the 35-hour week would also mean an extra six days' annual leave for signalling members, with no strings now attached."
The union executive has recommended acceptance of the the revised offer.
