Three arrested over Cardiff newsagent murder

Police investigating the 1987 murder of Cardiff newsagent Phillip Saunders have arrested three people.

South Wales Police arrested two men, aged 37 and 47, and a 40-year-old woman in Cardiff in the early hours of Wednesday morning. They have been taken to separate police stations in South Wales.

Mr Saunders, who owned three newspaper kiosks in the centre of Cardiff, was attacked and robbed as he returned to his home in Anstee Court in Canton on October 12, 1987.

Three men - Michael O'Brien, Darren Hall and Ellis Sherwood - were wrongly convicted of the murder in 1988. They were eventually freed in 1999 after having their convictions quashed by the Court of Appeal.

Detective Superintendent Adrian Hogg, who is leading the re-investigation to find the killers of Phillip Saunders said: "The thoughts of everyone involved in this reinvestigation are today with the family and friends of Phillip Saunders who have not been able to move on with their lives.

"South Wales Police remains totally committed to finding the person or people responsible for this dreadful crime. It is now nearly 19 years since Mr Saunders was brutally murdered and I urge anyone with any information, no matter how insignificant that information may seem to come forward.

"I have officers standing by to take calls and I would urge people to speak up so that the family of Phillip Saunders can finally learn who is responsible for his death."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the incident room on: 029 20 571 583 or call Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.
