Tories propose traffic plans
The Conservatives have unveiled a series of proposals aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion.
The proposals are part of a ten-point plan on transport, which has been devised by the party's economic competitiveness policy group.
The proposals include plans to allow drivers to turn in the direction of traffic flow at red lights - a proposal which is used in some areas of the US - as well as rephasing traffic lights to give priority to main roads, putting cycle lanes on pavements where there is room and allowing taxis and motorbikes to use bus lanes.
The proposals also include plans to build new carriageways and underpasses, removing "dangerous" cycle paths, reviewing speed limits, providing more pedestrian footbridges or underpasses and widening junctions and lanes around large roundabouts.
Chairman of the group, John Redwood, was unveiling the proposals during a visit to Barnet on Friday.
The Conservatives said that the proposals were not party policy, but "interim thinking" on how transport could be improved.

Cyclist Traffic Signals Launched In East London
Bow Roundabout in east London has become the first site to trial low-level traffic lights for cyclists. Transport for London, which hope to introduce the lights at 11 other sites, say that 80% of cyclists are in favour of their use. The new signals give cyclists an early start ahead f traffic.

£10bn Crossrail and road-pricing plans top transport proposals

Christmas Drink Driving Crackdown Launched
This year's Christmas drink driving campaign has been launched today, set to encourage drivers to leave their car keys at home if they are going out for a drink. The month-long campaign supports the annual Association of Chief Police Officers and the Department of Transport's national anti-drink and drug driving Christmas THINK campaign.

Plans To Tackle Bus Disruption
Plans have been proposed to make bus travel in England safer, more efficient and easier to use. A consultation paper – from the Department of Transport - outlines a range of measures to improve services including a ban on drinking alcohol on buses and a requirement for operators to provide more advanced warning of changes to services.

Proposals to raise smoking age limit unveiled
The government has unveiled proposals aimed at cracking down on smoking amongst teenagers. The proposals include plans to increase the minimum legal age to purchase tobacco and imposing tougher sanctions on retailers who persist in selling cigarettes to under-age teens. Around 9% of children aged between 11 and 15 smoke.
