Investigation launched into chemical plant blast
An investigation has been launched following a massive explosion at a chemical plant in Teeside.
The explosion happened on a pipe at the Terra Nitrogen UK Limited site in Billingham around 12.15am BST on Thursday.
A major emergency was declared after a fire started, fuelled by a mix of gases including hydrogen, nitrogen and a small mount of ammonia.
The blaze was eventually put out just before 0300 BST, but roads were sealed off around the scene and nearby residents were advised to keep their doors and windows closed as a precaution.
Two Terra employees were treated on the site for shock and minor cuts and bruises.
The site, which was previously owned by ICI, has been shut down and Terra Nitrogen have launched an investigation into the blast.
The Health and Safety Executive and the Environment Agency will also be investigating the cause of the explosion.
In a statement, Terra Nitrogen said: "The company recognises that the incident caused concern locally, but does not believe the event presented any danger to the public or would give rise to any public health issues."
Ashraf Malik, UK Manufacturing Director of Terra Nitrogen UK Limited said: "We would like to apologise to anyone who has been inconvenienced by the need for the precautionary actions and would thank people for their patience and understanding during the incident. The company would also thank our employees and the emergency services for their efforts."
Superintendent Ian Richards from Cleveland Police said: "Fortunately, what was initially perceived as a major incident was quickly dealt with."
