Man remanded over Ashleigh murder
A 34-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of Ashleigh Ewing in Newcastle.
Ronald Dixon, of Eighth Avenue, Heaton, appeared before Newcastle magistrates on Monday.
Ashleigh, 22, from Hebburn, had attended Mr Dixon's home as a part of her job as a support worker for Mental Health Matters. She was found dead at the flat on May 19. She had suffered multiple stab wounds.
Ashleigh had worked with the charity, which provides practical support and help for people with mental health problems, for six months and it was her first full-time job since graduating from the University of Northumbria last year with a degree in psychology.
Detective Steve Wade, who is leading the investigation into Ashleigh's murder, said that the case had been referred to the Health and Safety Executive, which will consider whether the systems and processes around Ashleigh's employment were being followed correctly.
Ashleigh's parents, Jeff Ewing, 50, and Aileen Ewing, 46, paid tribute to their daughter. They said: "Ashleigh Ewing was cherished and admired by her loving family and friends. She was a wonderful role model for the youth of today as she was unmaterialistic, unassuming and full of care and compassion for others less fortunate than herself.
"Her family will remember her with love, pride and joy. Her tragic loss is too hard to bear, but Ashleigh's spirit will live in their hearts forever."
