Blair in Baghdad for surprise visit
Prime Minister Tony Blair has hailed the formation of a new Iraqi government as a "new beginning" for the country, during a surprise visit to Baghdad.
Mr Blair met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki for talks and is also expected to meet with President Jalal Talabani during his visit, the second time he has visited Baghdad's heavily-fortified Green Zone.
The Prime Minister praised the "energy, enthusiasm and determination" of Mr Maliki and reflected on the "three years of struggle" which has led to the creation of the government.
Mr Blair said: "We want to see Iraq and the Iraqi people take charge of their own destiny and write the next chapter of Iraqi history themselves.
The Prime Minister's visit to Iraq has been shrouded in secrecy, but he had wanted to show his support for the new national unity government, despite the obvious security risks.
His trip to Baghdad comes in the wake of a number of suicide bombings and roadside explosions, which have resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries.
Over the weekend, the Prime Minister hailed the formation of the government as a "huge step forward" after Mr Maliki's ministers were sworn in before a parliament elected by more than 12 million voters.
