Former Tory minister Eric Forth dies

Conservative MP and former minister Eric Forth has died at the age of 61.

The Bromley and Chislehurst MP was admitted to hospital at the end of last week.

A statement released by the Conservative party said: "Eric Forth died peacefully in his sleep last night following a short illness. His wife, Carroll, was at his side."

Mr Forth had been an MP since 1983. He was first elected as MP for Mid Worcestershire, before moving to Bromley and Chislehurst in 1997. He held the seat with a 13,000 majority in the last General Election.

Mr Forth had been an MEP before entering Parliament.

When the Conservatives were in power, Mr Forth had served as a minister in both the Thatcher and Major governments. He served as a trade and education minister and, when the party were in opposition, most recently served as Shadow leader of the House.

Known for his colourful ties and waistcoats, Mr Forth was renowned as a staunch supporter of Margaret Thatcher. He was an ardent right-winger, who was a prominent supporter of Shadow Home Secretary David Davis during last year's Conservative leadership election.

Mr Forth was also famous for his extensive knowledge of parliamentary procedures, which he often used to block or delay legislation.

Glasgow-educated, Mr Forth had been married twice and had two daughters and one stepson.

Conservative leader David Cameron described Mr Forth as a "star". He said: "Eric's sudden and untimely death has robbed the House of Commons of one of its stars and Bromley and Chislehurst of a great constituency champion. He will be greatly missed by all of us in Parliament."

Tory whip Andrew Rosindell described Mr Forth as a "courageous politician", who fought for "true Conservative values". He said: "He was outspoken and often said things that people didn't like, but he wasn't afraid to say what he believed in."

Bob Neill, assembly member for Bexley and Bromley, described Mr Forth as a "magnificent parliamentarian". He said: "I greatly appreciated working with him over the years and know at first hand the effort he put into representing his constituents and maintaining the strength of the House of Commons as an institution."

Mr Forth's death means that a by-election will now be held in Bromley and Chislehurst.
