UK hacker faces extradition to the US
A British computer hacker is facing extradition to the US, following a court ruling today.
District Judge Nicholas Evans, sitting at Bow Magistrates' Court in London, recommended that Gary McKinnon should be extradited to the US to face trial for what has been described as "the biggest military hack of all time."
The US government has alleged that Mr McKinnon, 40, from north London, hacked into computers at the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Department of Defense and NASA between February 2001 and March 2002.
The alleged hacking is believed to have caused around £370,000 of damage to government computer systems.
More seriously, it has also been alleged that Mr McKinnon deleted files at a US Naval Air station, shortly after the September 11 attacks, and rendered the computer system inoperable.
Mr McKinnon has admitted hacking into the US military computer networks, but said that he was not acting with malicious intent. Instead, he claimed that he was seeking to find evidence of an alleged UFO cover-up by the US government.
The final decision on whether Mr McKinnon will be extradited to the US for trial will be made by Home Secretary John Reid.
