Lib Dem donor extradited to UK on fraud charges

A millionaire businessman who donated over £2 million to the Liberal Democrats has been extradited to the UK after being arrested in a fraud investigation.

Michael Brown, 40, a Glasgow-born businessman who is now based in Spain, was arrested in Madrid on fraud charges brought by the HSBC bank.

The case does not involve the Liberal Democrat party.

According to reports, Mr Brown is expected to deny the charges against him.

A statement issued by the City of London police said: "A 40-year-old British man has been extradited back to the UK following his arrest in Madrid by officers of the City of London Police economic crime department assisted by the Spanish authorities.

"The man arrested is currently under investigation by the City of London Police's money-laundering investigation unit in connection with large-scale suspected fraud.

"The extradition has taken place in co-operation with the Crown Prosecution Service with regard to a private prosecution."

Police said that a number of high profile and wealthy victims had been targeted in the fraud and added that further arrests had been made in the UK.

However, police said that the investigations were still in the early stages.
