Land Registry reports rise in house sales

The number of property sales in England and Wales increased by 37.5% between January and March this year, the Land Registry has reported.

The volume of sales increased from 159,116 in 2005 to 218,770 for the same period in 2006, the Land Registry said.

The Land Registry's latest residential property price report also showed that 1,032 properties over £1 million were sold, compared to 655 for the same period in 2005.

The report also showed that the average house price in England and Wales rose by 5.1% in the year to March 31, to reach £192,745. This compared to an annual increase of 10.3% for the same period last year.

All economic regions in England and Wales showed an increase in average prices, the Land Registry reported.

In Greater London, the volume of sales increased by 40.7%, rising from 20,788 in 2005 to 29,241 for the same period in 2006.

The average property price rose from £288,507 in 2005 to £306,661 for the same period in 2006 - an increase of 6.3%.

In Greater London, 625 properties over £1 million were sold during the period, compared to 402 in the same period in 2005.

Banville wins the 2005 Booker Prize
