Prescott calls for end to leadership 'war'

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has called for supporters of Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown to stop their 'war' over the Labour party leadership.

Mr Prescott, who made the comments in an interview with 'The Independent', said that an "orderly and smooth transition" was needed.

The interview was the first given by the Deputy Prime Minister since news broke about his affair with his diary secretary Tracey Temple.

Commenting on the affair, Mr Prescott said that he had been "stupid". However, he said: "I have learnt my lessons about these matters. I just want to get on and show I can do a job and make a contribution and be a valuable part of the Labour Party and this government."

During the interview, Mr Prescott also addressed criticism about being stripped of his departmental responsibilities in the recent Cabinet reshuffle, while retaining his full salary and perks.

The Deputy Prime Minister told 'The Independent' that the removal of his departmental responsibilities had been discussed more than a year ago, in order to allow him to focus on chairing Cabinet committees and representing the Prime Minister abroad.
