McClaren named England boss

Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren has been named as the new England manager.

McClaren has been given a four-year contract and will take over from Sven-Goran Eriksson in August, after the World Cup in Germany.

The appointment of the Middlesbrough boss was confirmed by the Football Association on Thursday afternoon, following a board meeting in London.

"This is the biggest honour that any coach can have and is obviously the highlight of my career," McClaren said, after the announcement. "It's a massive challenge and one that I welcome."

McClaren has already been working with the England team as Eriksson's assistant. He also enjoyed success with Middlesbrough this season, leading them to this year's UEFA Cup final.

However, McClaren was not the first choice for the England job. The post was originally offered to Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari, who is currently the Portugal coach, but he turned it down.

Other potential candidates for the position were Bolton manager Sam Allardyce, Alan Curbishley from Charlton and former Celtic boss Martin O'Neill.
