Queen begins 80th birthday celebrations

The Queen hosted a party to mark her 80th birthday with a number of invited guests who share the same birthday as her.

The 99 pensioners – 70 women and 29 men – who share the same birthday as the Queen – April 21, 1926 – were selected to attend the special dinner in a ballot held earlier this year.

The guests, along with their invited companions, enjoyed a three-course meal in the grand Palace Ballroom at Buckingham Palace, with some of the guests being seated beside the Queen or the Duke of Edinburgh.

The guests were also invited to have a drink in the Picture Gallery before the lunch.

Among those in attendance were Fermanagh woman Peggy Bogue and her daughter Maureen Kelly.

The party is just one of a number of events planned to mark the Queen's 80th birthday. The other events include a service of thanksgiving at St George's Chapel on April 23 and a service of thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral on June 15.

The Queen will spend her birthday at Windsor Castle where Prince Charles will host a family dinner.

Prime Minister Tony Blair sent his best wishes to the Queen today, praising her "unshakeable sense of duty". Leading the humble address in Parliament, Mr Blair said that the Queen had provided a "re-assuring and unifying prescence" and had had a "profound impact on our country, the commonwealth and the world", displaying "unfailing devotion to her people".
