Serious injuries as scaffolding collapses

Three people have been seriously injured after scaffolding collapsed at a building site in Milton Keynes.

Fifteen stories of scaffolding at the Witan Gate site, where a new Jury's Hotel is being built, collapsed on Tuesday around lunchtime.

Up to 20 ambulances were reported to be at the scene, along with air ambulances, fire crews and police.

A number of people were reportedly treated for injuries at the scene. One of those who was seriously injured is reported to be in surgery.

It is not thought that anyone is still trapped inside the structure, although specialist teams and equipment are being sent to the scene to seach for anyone who may be trapped.

Around 200 workers are believed to have been at the scene at the time of the collapse.

According to one eyewitness, high winds were blowing when the scaffolding collapsed.

Another witness described the scene as looking like a "pile of matchsticks".

The site has been cordoned off and nearby offices and buildings have evacuated.

The construction site is run by Northern Ireland firm McAleer and Rushe.

It has been reported that the company has launched an investigation into the collapse.

Pupil Dies After Wall Collapses In Edinburgh School
A pupil has died after a wall collapsed on to her at a school in Edinburgh. Emergency services were called to the scene at Liberton High School, Gilmerton Road, at around 10am this morning. Ambulance staff treated the schoolgirl at the scene, however she was pronounced dead. The incident is believed to have happened in a PE changing room.

Construction Firms Fined Over Worker's Death
Two Lancashire companies have been sentenced following the death of a construction worker in Altham near Accrington. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted Howorth Scaffolding Services Ltd and Glenmill Group (Developments) Ltd after Peter Walton fell five metres from scaffolding on Altham Industrial Estate, Sykeside Drive in May 2006.

Man Killed After Wall Collapses In East London
A construction worker has died after a wall collapsed at a building site in east London. Emergency services were alerted to the site on the Isle of Dogs at approximately 09:00 today, 3 December. According to the Metropolitan Police, the man, believed to be in his 30s, died a short time later.

Victims' families need more support, report suggests
The families of murder and manslaughter victims require more support from police, courts and support groups, a report has suggested. The survey, conducted by Victim Support, comprised interviews with 41 bereaved relatives as well as findings from focus groups with police, probation employees and Victim Support employees and volunteers.
