Men arrested under Terrorism Act at hospital

Police have arrested four men under the Terrorism Act at a hospital in Staffordshire.

The men were arrested at Stafford District General Hospital following an operation involving firearms officers on Wednesday night.

A fifth man, who was being treated at the hospital, was moved to another hospital for specialist treatment.

The four men are now being held in custody at police stations in Staffordshire.

A spokeswoman for Staffordshire Police said that the men had been arrested under the Terrorism Act as a result of information received. She said: "They were arrested by officers from the force's incident management unit which included some specialist firearms officers."

Later on Thursday, Staffordshire Police said that there was no evidence to suggest that a terrorist incident had taken place.

David Kidney, Labour MP for Stafford, said that he believed there was "no substance" in the arrests and believed that it was probably hospital staff on heightened awareness ahead of a visit by the Queen to the area, due to take place on Friday.

The Queen's scheduled visit to Stafford is understood to be going ahead as planned.

According to reports, two sections of the hospital car park remained cordoned off on Thursday morning. However, the hospital is now operating as normal.
