BA announces job cuts

British Airways is to cut 400 jobs as part of plans to restructure its UK direct sales operations.

The airline said that it will close its Belfast-based customer call centre, with the loss of 100 jobs, as well as its 17 High Street Travel Shops, by August, which would result in the loss of another 300 jobs.

In a statement, BA said that the reason for the restructuring was due to more people booking flights and holidays online.

Martin George, British Airways; commercial director, said that calls to the company's UK call centres had fallen by more than 60% since 2001, from 15 million to six million. Despite the closure of call centres in Glasgow and London two years ago, the company still had "too much property for the size of our operation", Mr George said.

"It is with regret that we propose to close Belfast and make more efficient use of our centres in Manchester and Newcastle," Mr George said. "This is not about moving telephone calls abroad and customers in the UK will still speak to people based in our remaining UK call centres."

Mr George also said that the Travel Shops were forecast to make "ever increasing losses" in the years ahead, in spite of continued efforts to reduce costs and improve revenue.

Mr George said: "The announcement today is not an easy one and not one which we have taken lightly. This decision is not a reflection on the professionalism and efforts of our staff in these areas. It is about ensuring that we respond to changes in the marketplace."

BA said that it would consult with trade unions about the proposed closures.

The airline will consult with its trade unions about the proposed closures and would offer support to all affected staff to find jobs either within British Airways or with other employers.

CWU Blasts Vodafone Layoffs

Police investigation launched into Indian call centre ‘fraud’
Following newspaper allegations that an undercover reporter suceeded in purchasing UK bank account details from an Indian call centre worker, a police investigation has been launched. ‘The Sun’ newspaper reported that one of its journalists purchased account information relating to 1,000 UK customers from a call centre worker in Delhi.

Job Centre's Referring Claimants To Food Banks
Job Centre staff are referring thousands of welfare recipients to food bank, over concerns they have not got enough money to eat, according to the BBC. Benefits officials have given around 6,000 people vouchers for emergency food parcels in the last year, figures obtained by the BBC suggest.

300 New Jobs Announced In Cardiff
A Cardiff-based call centre has announced the creation of 300 new jobs. Firstsource Solutions currently employs 800 people at Cardiff Bay and is to create new sales and customers service jobs in both its inbound and outbound departments. Making the announcement the company said that it is "delighted" to be able to bring new employment to Cardiff.

DTI report says call centres to create 200,000 jobs
Call centres in the UK are set to increase further according to a new report which predicts that an extra 200,000 workers will be recruited in the industry over the next three years. The Department of Trade And Industry report showed that the industry was “healthy” and had grown by 250% since 1995.
