Money stolen in Securitas van raid
Police have launched an investigation after a Securitas van was robbed by a gang in Cheshire last night.
The robbery happened in the Woolston area of Warrington on Wednesday night around 8:15pm.
A Securitas security van, on route to a delivery, had been travelling behind a Volvo flatbed truck. When the truck stopped, the Securitas van was then rammed from behind by a farm tractor, trapping it against the truck.
Two males, wearing balaclavas and carrying crowbars, attacked the van, before setting both the tractor and flatbed lorry on fire and fleeing the scene.
Cheshire Police said that the total amount of money stolen from the van was less than a million, but was "possibly in the thousands". Police said that the exact amount would be determined once the van had been forensically examined.
The security van staff were unharmed during the attack.
The robbers are believed to have escaped in a Volvo V40 car, which was recovered less than a mile away.
Cheshire Police said that it had been established that both the flatbed lorry and the tractor used to commit the offence had been stolen from the Wilberfoss area, near York in Humberside, just off the A1079 and close to the A64, sometime between 9 and 10pm on Tuesday evening.
The lorry is a white Volvo V60 with a flatbed, while the tractor is a red Massey Ferguson and it was transported on the lorry.
Police are keen to trace the movements of both these vehicles between the time they were stolen to the time of the robbery on Wednesday night.
The robbery follows the £53 million robbery at the Securitas depot in Tonbridge, Kent last month. However, police said that there was nothing at this stage to suggest that last night's robbery was linked to the Kent raid.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on: 01244 614893 or Crimestoppers anonymously on: 0800 555 111.
