Broadband connectivity accelerates
Returns from Internet Service Providers (ISPs) showed that broadband connections in December 2005 reached 64.2% of all Internet connections, up from 62.3% in the previous month.
Overall, the Office of National Statistics figures revealed there was an increase of 5.6% in the total number of active subscriptions to the Internet on the year, though there was a slight decreased (0.1%) between November and December 2005.
As internet users continue to be attracted by high-speed internet access, the market share of broadband connections has been increasing, reflecting its growing popularity, affordability and widespread availability. Dial-up connections have continued to decline and now account for 35.8% of all Internet connections.
Year on year, broadband connectivity increased by 58.8%, with a monthly increase of 3% in December 2005. Dial-up connections year on year fell to 34.1% in December, a decrease, from November to December 2005 of 5.2%. The index of dial-up connections has been declining since it peaked at 114.3 in February 2002.
While some connection packages offer speeds of up to 8Mbits per second, many ISPs have recently provided upgrades to customers to take connection speeds from 1Mbits per second to 2Mbits per second.
