Bankers lose extradition battle
Three British bankers are to be extradited the US to face fraud charges linked to the Enron scandal.
David Bermingham of Goring, Oxfordshire, Gary Mulgrew of Sible Hedringham, Essex, and Giles Darby of Lower South Wraxall, Wiltshire are alleged to have defrauded Natwest subsidiary, Greenwich Natwich, of £4.2 million ($7.3 million).
The allegations surfaced after the collapse in 2001 of the US energy company Enron and US authorities issued extradition requests in February 2004.
Lawyers had contended that the offences were not covered by the extradition laws and would be a breach of European human rights legislation. However, today's ruling by Lord Justice Laws, in the first test of extradition laws enacted in 2003, means that the three will face trial under US jurisdiction.
Enron collapsed in 2001 after admitting inflating profits and concealing debts.
Enron senior executives, Kenneth Lay and Jeffery Skilling, are currently being tried in Texas for charges relating to corporate malpractices.
