Murray hurries to first major title
Rising British tennis star Andy Murray has clinched his first major title win since turning professional.
Murray recovered from a tentative start to beat Australian Leyton Hewitt in the SAP Open in San Jose, California to take the title 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). Although the Australian looked at ease in the first set, it was Murray who saw off Hewitt in the second set and took the early lead in the third.
But Hewitt fought back, taking the third set to a tie-break, which Murray won 7-3.
Murray, 18, who said he had overcome his nerves, described the win as the "biggest moment of his life in tennis so far."
Hewitt, who won his first ATP title at just 16, praised his opponent's all-round performance in both attack and defence. "There haven't been too many 18-year-olds in the last five years or so with that kind of skill," he said.
Murray, currently the British number three, had overcome the tournament's top-seed Andy Roddick in the semi-final 7-5, 7-5 in a confident win that was already a career best performance.
Murray moves into the world's top 50, leaping 13 places up the rankings following the title win to 47th spot. Tim Henman is 40th and Greg Rusedski is 43rd in the rankings.
