Policewoman gunned down investigating burglary

A probationary police officer has been gunned down as she investigated a report of a burglary in Nottingham.

Rachel Bown, 23, was shot and seriously wounded as she and a fellow officer tried to stop a man at the scene of a reported break-in at Lenton Boulevard in Lenton at around midnight.

Rushed to the city's Queen's Medical Centre she underwent emergency surgery for a stomach wound and is in intensive care. Her condition is described as "serious".

It is understood that Pc Bown was wearing standard issue stab-proof body armour.

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Police said that no one has yet been arrested, but that several scenes have been cordoned off for forensic examination in the Lenton area and that a major enquiry is underway.

Divisional Commander, Chief Supt Marcus Beale, said: “This is an extremely serious incident and has been a terrible shock for her family. Officers are clearly very concerned about their colleague. We are 100 per cent committed to finding and apprehending this offender as soon as possible.”

An incident room has been established at Radford Road Police Station. Police said that the details of a description of the suspect are still being clarified.
