BT issues child porn warning

BT has warned that the number of attempts to access child pornography on the internet has increased in the past 18 months.

The telecoms company reported that its screening software, used to block access to sites featuring banned images of children, is now blocking 35,000 hits per day.

BT, which is estimated to account for one-third of the UK's internet market, first introduced the Cleanfeed blocking programme in 2004. The program prevents users from accessing web sites blacklisted by the Internet Watch Foundation, which monitors illegal activity on the internet.

When the programme was first launched, there were only 10,000 attempted hits per day.

The announcement of the figures has led to calls for all UK internet service providers to provide the same facility to block web sites as BT.
