Four children killed in car crash

Four children have been killed in a car crash in Essex.

The children - three girls, aged four, eight and 15 and a boy aged 16 - were travelling in a Ford Fiesta, which collided with a Vauxhall Corsa on the A126 near Tilbury on Tuesday evening.

All four children were taken to Basildon Hospital, but died despite the efforts of medical staff.

The female driver of the Fiesta, who is understood to be the mother of two of the children, was also seriously injured in the crash. She was taken to Darent Hospital in Dartford, where she is being treated for serious back injuries.

The occupants of the Corsa - a 56-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman - were not seriously injured in the crash, but were also taken to Darent Hospital.

Police said that all those involved in the crash lived locally.

A spokesperson from Essex Ambulance service said that one of their rapid response cars came across the crash on its way to another emergency call.

A total of six ambulances attended the scene of the accident.
