Man in court over elderly couple murder

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of an elderly couple in Kent.

Brett Clifton, 21, of Beckett Street, Faversham, is accused of murdering Terry Martin, 72, and his wife Vera, 78, in their home.

Mr Clifton appeared before Sittinghourne Magistrates' Court on Monday. He was remanded in custody to reappear at Maidstone Crown Court on February 13. No application was made for bail.

The couple's bodies were found in their Abbey Street home last Wednesday, after a relative called to the house. They had not been seen since January 21.

Post-mortem examinations found that the couple had died from multiple injuries.

The couple's Daihatsu Sirion had been found burned out in Faversham last Monday.

The couple had lived in the house for 40 years and Mrs Martin is believed to have been born there.

On Friday, police arrested two adults and three juveniles in connection with the murders. One of the adults and two of the youths were released on bail on the same day, while the third youth was released on bail on Saturday.
