UK unemployment reaches 5%

Unemployment in the UK has risen to about 1.53 million or 5%, the highest figure in three years.

The figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) also highlighted how job vacancies fell by 12,700 to 606,500, while the number of benefit claimants rose by 7,200 to 909,100.

The 'economic inactivity' rate for people of working age was 21.4% for the three months ending in November 2005, unchanged from the previous quarter. The number of economically inactive people of working age rose by 25,000 to reach 7.94 million.

The annual rate of growth in average earnings (the AEI), excluding bonuses, was 3.8% in November 2005, down from 3.9 per cent the previous month. Including bonuses, it was 3.4 per cent, down from 3.6 per cent the previous month.

Unemployment Rises By 28,000
According to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) UK unemployment rose by 28,000 to 2.67 million during the three months to January. The unemployment rate for January was 8.4%, up from 8.3%. Between 16-24 year olds unemployment rose by 16,000 to 1.042m, a rate of 22.5%.

Jobs figures show increase in employment and fall in unemployment
The latest UK jobs figures have shown an increase in employment numbers and a fall in unemployment, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) revealed today. The employment rate for people of working age was 74.9% for the three months ending in March 2005, unchanged from the previous quarter and on the year.

Fall in jobseeker allowance claims
The number of people in the UK claiming jobseeker's allowance fell by its largest amount in two and a half years, and the unemployment rate dropped by 23,000 in the three months to December 2006. According to the Office for National Statistics, the fall left the unemployment rate at 5.
