Funeral held for Katherine Horton
A family funeral service has been held today for Katherine Horton, the backpacking student who was murdered in Thailand on New Year's Day.
Around 200 mourners attended the service at St Isan's Church in Llanishen, including Miss Horton's parents and her two brothers. Following the service the coffin was taken to Thornhill Crematorium. People had gathered along the route to pay their respects as the cortege passed.
A jet skier discovered Miss Horton's body in the sea off Koh Samui on January 2. The 21-year-old student had last been seen walking along the beach, as she left a part of friends to use her mobile phone to call her mother.
Two Thai fishermen are awaiting sentence on Wednesday for the rape and murder of Miss Horton.
Bualoi Posit, 23 and Wichai Somkhaoyai, 24, pleaded guilty to the charges against them at the court in Surat Thani in southern Thailand. The case was adjourned until Wednesday, when the men will face sentencing. Under Thai law the maximum sentence for the charges is the death penalty.
Amid fears that the case has damaged the country's image, Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has called for the death penalty to be applied.
However, media reports that the family did not support the death penalty were subsequently denied.
