Three killed as fishing boat capsizes

Three men have died after a Belgian fishing vessel capsized, 11 miles south of Beachy Head, East Sussex.

The vessel had a crew of four on board and one 19-year-old man who was spotted clinging to the upturned hull was rescued. He is being treated for shock and hypothermia in hospital.

Two bodies have also been recovered, while a third was seen to sink under the surface of the sea.

Earlier, Dover Coastguard Duty Area Officer Mike Toogood said that rescuers had received a response from inside the hull by banging on the outside and they believed that someone was trapped inside.

However, divers failed to find anyone during two searches of the boat and it has been reported that the search has now been called off.

Dover Coastguard was alerted at 08:34 GMT, after a merchant vessel reported seeing the upturned hull of a fishing vessel with a man clinging to it.

The Coastguard helicopter was scrambled and the Eastbourne lifeboat was launched.

The warship Severn also assisted in the search, along with several other merchant vessels, while the merchant vessel Vanquish also launched its rescue boat.
