Search continues for abandoned twins’ mother

Police have appealed for a mother, whose newborn twins were left in the car park of a Birmingham hospital, to come forward.

The babies, a boy and a girl, were discovered by a security guard around 9:30am yesterday morning abandoned in a box in the car park of Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.

The twins are being cared for at the hospital, where staff have named them Holly and Joseph. They are said to be in a stable condition, although Holly is reported to be “poorly”. Both twins are in incubators and on drips to provide them with fluids.

Police said that the babies could not have in the car park for more than a few hours. They are examining CCTV footage, consulting medical records and conducting DNA tests, in an attempt to trace the mother.

Both police and medical staff are concerned about the mother’s welfare, as they believe she has an infection.

Detective Inspector Dave Wallbank said: “We would like to reassure the mother that she will be dealt with compassionately and sensitively. We are keen to reunite her with her children."

Anyone with any information should contact police on: 0845 113 5000 or Heartlands Hospital on: 0121 424 3514.
