More men paying for sex, research reveals

The number of men paying for sex has almost doubled in the past ten years, new research has revealed.

The study, published in the Sexually Transmitted Infections journal, compared surveys of British men conducted in 1990 and 2000. It found that nearly one in ten men in the later survey had paid for sex, compared to one in 20 in the earlier survey.

Men aged between 25 and 34 were found to be the most likely to pay for sex and the journal suggested that rising divorce rates, sex tourism and the increasing availability of commercial sex, all contributed to the increase.

The study has raised concerns over the UK’s sexual health, as it also revealed that only a fifth of those surveyed had ever visited a sexual health clinic.

The publications of the research coincides with a report from the NHS Confederation and the Terence Higgins Trust, which is calling for a radical overhaul of sexual health services.

The report, published to coincide with World AIDS Day, suggests that existing services “cannot cope with Britain’s sexual health crisis”.

It made a number of recommendations, including a move to community-based services and the integration of contraception and STI services.

Jo Webber, Deputy Policy Director at the NHS Confederation, said: “Dedicated NHS staff are doing their best to deal with the consequences of a rapid deterioration in our nation’s sexual health, but we believe a fresh approach is needed to provide more services in the community.”

The latest figures, published by the Health Protection Agency, found that more than 58,000 are now living with HIV in the UK. The number of new chlamydia cases being diagnosed also increased by 9% in 2004 and the number of new syphilis cases diagnosed increased by 37%.
