Boy dies on school potholing trip
A 14-year-old schoolboy has died in a potholing tragedy while on a school trip.
Joseph Lister was part of a group from Tadcaster Grammar School on a residential trip to Bewerley Park Centre for Outdoor Education in Upper Nidderdale, North Yorkshire, when the incident occurred.
The teenager was with a party of ten other pupils on the first day of their trip, in a cave known as Manchester Hole, when he apparently became separated from the caving group.
It is thought that Joseph may have become trapped in the cave, when water levels began to rise.
He was discovered by rescuers around 5:30pm on Monday, around an hour and a half after he disappeared. Taken to Harrogate District Hospital, he was pronounced dead on Monday evening.
Geoff Mitchell, headteacher of Tadcaster Grammar School, said: “There is a tremendous sense of grief throughout the whole school.”
The school trip was cancelled following the tragedy and all the pupils have returned home.
An investigation into the death has been launched and a post-mortem was due to be carried out on Tuesday.
The pupils had been learning the basics of caving at the cave, which is in regular use by potholing beginners.
